Dorsum of tongue:

This slide is of the upper surface of the tongue showing the structures which give the surface its roughness (filliform papillae) and also those which contain taste buds (fungiform and circumvalate papillae). Area 1 shows filliform papillae and a single fungiform papilla. Area 2 contains a circumvalate papilla with a minor salivary gland beneath it and taste buds on its side wall.
